EAST GRAND FORKS – The grand opening of Molly Yeh’s new restaurant, Bernie’s, took place at 8 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 1.
Located in East Grand Forks, Bernie’s occupies the former Sickie’s Garage Restaurant and Bar. Bernie’s is not only a restaurant — the space also includes a cafe and market.
Saturday morning, a restaurant patron, Cindy Dahl, held baked goods and a loaf of bread as she perused the market.
“I’m taking all this home,” she said. “My sister follows (Molly Yeh's television) show, and she wasn’t able to come.”
Patrons lined up to order at the drink bar, studying the paper menus. The menu includes a variety of cuisine, from baloney sandwiches to kale Caesar salad. The cuisine has been described as a combination of Midwest and Scandinavian. There are numerous fresh loaves of bread and baked goods to take home.
Right when patrons walk through the door, they are met by a table with copies of Yeh’s new cookbook, “Home is Where the Eggs Are.” Yeh’s book signing, originally scheduled for the afternoon of Oct. 1, was moved to 1 p.m. on Saturday, Oct 8. The event will end at 3 p.m.
One patron of the restaurant, Stephanie Irlbeck, said she came from an hour and 45 minutes away. She said it’s been “cool” to watch the restaurant transform.
Yeh is best known for her Food Network program, “Girl Meets Farm.”
Bernie’s will be open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. for breakfast and lunch for the time being. Dinner hours will be added in the following weeks.
